I am who I am - Bible passages

14 God said to Moses, "I am who I am . [b] This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I AM has sent me to you.' "

15 God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The LORD, [c] the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.

It is a curious passage of the Bible for sure. When the lord says "I am who I am"....the question is who is the lord?

Was "The Lord" indeed the same "entity" that created the entire universe as we know it today?

My understanding is that the Hebrew word translated "I am who am" has something to do with self-existence, or eternal existence. The Moffitt translation uses the word "the Eternal" as a translation of God's name.

Interestingly, in Exodus 6:2-3 God told Moses that He was not known to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as YHWH, but only as God Almighty. Yet there are passages in Genesis that seem to indicate that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob knew that God's name was YHWH, such as Genesis 14:22-23.

The only explanation that makes sense to me is that Abraham knew the Father as YHWH, but only knew Christ as God Almighty. Moses was dealing with Christ (1 Corinthians 10:1-5), and Christ revealed to Moses that His name was also YHWH. In other words, both Christ and God the Father share the name YHWH. This makes sense because both Christ and the Father are eternally self-existent. See http://www.ptgbook.org/nameofgodbiblestudy.htm for an article about this.
